Windsor, ON, - Olympians Meghan Agosta, Melissa Bishop and Mary Spencer,
and the Canadian champion University of Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team
— Windsor has an abundance of role models for young girls when it comes to
women’s athletics. And on Sunday, girls and women received more inspiration to
embrace physical activity, in the form of a big fundraising event that involved
local athletes — male and female — modeling sporting attire provided by area
retailers. Savvy Sweats and Sweets was the first event of its kind put on by
Leadership Advancement for Women and Sport, a Windsor organization created 20
years ago to enhance opportunities for females in sports. Raising funds and raising the organization’s
profile in the community is the next step LAWS needs to take to expand its
mission, said organizers. “We still have
stereotype with woman in sports that haven’t been broken yet,” said LAWS
chairwoman Margery Holman. “What we are doing doesn’t just affect women, it’s a
social issue.” www.fundraisingweb.org

Fundraising Event to Benefit 2-year-old Leukemia Patient
Edison, NJ—
When township musician Jerry Ganz played his first show with his band last
year, little Christopher Krakowiecki was there to support him. When Christopher’s parents, Melissa and Matt,
told Ganz that the 2-year-old had been diagnosed with leukemia just before Thanksgiving
of last year, Ganz wanted to support his little buddy and the family in any way
that he could. “Christopher is my
next-door neighbor, and when I heard about [his illness], I told my wife, ‘I’d
like to do a show for Christopher,’ and she said that would be great,” Ganz
said. “So we ended up getting the show together to help raise some money for
the family.” The Jerry Ganz Band will
present the “Christopher Krakowiecki Benefit Show”, proceeds will benefit
Christopher and help his parents deal with the monumental costs of the
treatment he will be receiving regularly for three-and-a-half years. www.fundraisingweb.org
